Women's Wrestling Kicks Off Season at Maverick Open
Grand Junction, CO - The Life Pacific Women's Wrestling team kicked off it's season this weekend as they traveled to Grand Junction, CO to wrestle in the Maverick Open, hosted by Colorado Mesa University. The tournament featured teams from NCAA DI, NCAA DII, NAIA, and Unattached. The teams that competed in the tournament were Chadron State, Colorado Mesa, Dixie State, Fresno State, Ottawa (AZ), University of Providence, Wayland Baptist, and LPU. The tournament hosted tournament style wrestling for the weight classes: 101, 109, 116, 123, 130, 136, 143, 155, 170, and 191.
Samantha Barragan led the way for the Warriors as she placed 2nd in the 136 lb. weight clas for the entire tournament. In the first round, Samantha defeated NCAA DI opponent, Kaelyn Siason, from Dixie State University in dominant fashion by tech fall with a score of 10-0. In the semi-finals, Barragan found herself competing against Jolynn Harris from the host team Colorado Mesa, and she defeated her by way of tech fall of 14-4. In the championship match, she came up short against Jordan Suarez from Wayland Baptist, but finished 2nd overall in the weight class.
The Warriors also had Angelique Cervantes lead the way for the team in the 101 lb. weight class, where she took 3rd overall. She received a bye in the opening round, and in the quarterfinals, defeated Taylor Lindstrom from Chadron State by way of tech fall with a score of 10-0. In the semis, she lost to Iverly Navarro from the University of Provience, but still had an opportunity to compete to place for third in the weight class. In the Consolation semis, she defeated Malarie Dominguez by way of fall, to move on to the 3rd place match. In the final match of the day for her, Cervantes defeated Kaylie Catalano from the host school, Colorado Mesa, by way of fall and secured the 3rd place finish in the 101 lb. weight class.
