LPU Volleyball Defeats (RV) Westmont College For First Time in Program History
Santa Barbara, CA – On Saturday evening, the Warriors of LPU traveled down to Santa Barbara with hopes of making history in mind. After taking Westmont to 5 sets in both matches last year, the Warriors were finally able to pull it out, defeating Westmont College for the first time in program history. The battle featured 2 of the top 3 teams in the GSAC going to toe to toe, in a match that would not be able to determined without going to a fifth set. LPU defeated Westmont 3-2 (25-23, 25-21, 15-25, 19-25, 15-12), and improve to 9-2 on the season and 6-2 in GSAC play. The 6-2 record in the GSAC places them in 2nd place in the standings as they look to finish up the first half of play within the GSAC on Tuesday.
Westmont came out on fire, fueled by a quick 4-point service run, which got them off to a 4-0 lead. Coming off of her best match in her young collegiate career, Maddie Robertson came in and gave the Warriors a 6-point service run, which allowed LPU to take the lead back from Westmont 6-4. The 1st set would prove to be a back and forth battle, but ultimately, LPU was able to seal the deal thanks to late kills by Mackenzie Stewart and Hannah Caddow. They took the first set 25-23.
The Warriors did a good job of being the aggressors in the 2nd set, as they built a healthy 14-9 lead, after another service run by Robertson. LPU's defense at the net was established early, thanks to Audrianna Guzman, Mackenzie Stewart, and Caitlin Riden, who led the way for LPU in blocks. Guzman and Stewart finished the match with 5 blocks each, and Riden finished with 2 blocks. Bailey Collette and Mackenzie Grooms had key kills late, helping LPU finish the 2nd set, 25-21, taking a commanding 2-0 lead.
In the third set, Westmont showed why they are receiving votes at the national level. Ater playing the set even with LPU to a score of 13-13, Westmont went on a staggering 10-point service run, by Ilyssa Ocampo, which put the set out of reach for the Warriors. They took the third set 25-15, sending the message to LPU, that if they were going to win this match, they needed to go out and take it.
LPU's attack that was firing on all cylinders in the first 2 sets, was significantly slowed down in the 3rd and 4th set. Westmont did a good job adjusting to the attack by Hannah Caddow, and forced other Warriors to beat them. On the back of another 6-point service run, Westmont gained control of the 4th set, building their lead to 18-11. They evened the match up at 2 sets each, sending it to a deciding 5th set.
Entering the fifth set, both teams solidified why they were 2 of the top teams in the GSAC. The set was back and forth, but ultimately, LPU was able to come out on top, thanks to some key kills from Bailey Collette, Mackenzie Grooms, Guzman, and Caddow. They won the 5th set 15-12, cementing this moment in LPU history as the first victory over Westmont College for the volleyball program.
As Coach Wes Schneider reflected on Saturday's thrilling victory, he stated, "Tonight was a great win for the girls. I believe that it was the first time in LPU history beating Westmont, which is a pretty big mark, as they are always a nationally recognized program! I am so proud of the collective effort from every single girl tonight and they are just such an amazing group of girls."
